ERC Seeks to be the Benchmark for Excellence in Asia

The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) has set a daunting, but not impossible vision: “Asia’s benchmark for excellence in power regulation”, amidst the challenges in the ongoing comprehensive electric power industry reform program.

Towards the fulfilment of this vision, the ERC has put premium importance on training and development of its leaders. A Leadership Training was recently held for ERC management, which was organized by ERC together with the Asian Institute of Management (AIM) Policy Center and supported by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), through the Energy and Clean Air Project (ECAP). Said training is part of a long-term Leadership Development Program that ERC will embark with the help of AIM’s expertise in developing effective managers and leaders.

As a first step towards molding new leaders in the power sector, key leadership values were discussed during the training by foremost policy discussion authorities, Dr. Federico Macaranas of the AIM Policy Center, and Atty. Antonio La Viña and Dr. Onofre R. Pagsanghan of the Ateneo de Manila University.

“The ERC is committed to bring innovations to its services and fulfil its responsibilities, emphasizing that protecting the consumers is a vital part of ERC’s vision and mission”, ERC Chairman and CEO Rodolfo B. Albano, Jr. stressed.

The leadership training also included self-assessment on the part of the participants on their leadership strengths and weaknesses. The assessment showed that aside from training on core competencies directly related to their work, such as management skills and technical training, the participants were also conscious of the need for personal development. This balance of having management, organizational, and personal development skills is also what leadership and good governance should be all about. Based on these assessments, future areas for training and development will be charted out.

At the end of the day, it is the heart for service that makes for good leaders. Together, the ERC and USAID are working to provide quality energy for a quality life for the Filipinos.
