ERC uncovers distribution of fake meters
On August 19, 2004, two (2) unsuspecting individuals submitted their meters to the Consumer Affairs Service (CAS) for standard testing and calibration only to discover that the meter seal and test report were fake.
Engr. Legario Galang, Jr., Chief of the Meter Division observed that one of the test reports bear the forged signature of one of the authorized test engineers while the other meter bears the signature of an unidentified person whose signature does not appear in any specimen signatures of duly authorized test engineers available on file.
Further inquiry with the owners of the meters revealed that the dealers of the meters are operating in Sta. Cruz, Manila and in Mandaluyong. “ERC warns this unscrupulous persons and entities to stop their notorious activities or face the full force of the law. The Commission also advises the general public to be vigilant and beware of these fake meter seals and test reports,” ERC Chairman Rodolfo B. Albano, Jr. said. “We would like to inform the public that ERC has the exclusive authority to test, calibrate and seal meters,” he added.
The Commission has a text messaging facility to receive complaints and inquiries. Smart and Globe cell phone subscribers only need to type ERC <space><message> and send it to 2920. They can also reach the ERC through its consumer hotlines by dialling (632) 687-5577 or (632) 687-5544 or sending an email to consumer@erc.gov.ph.
